![]() ![]() Her career ended in tragedy when she disobeyed the orders of the Dukes of Baldur's Gate on the battlefield, and when her disobedience placed her and her troops in danger, the Dukes refused to send her support when she needed it most. A century ago, the mercenary commander Eldrith served Baldur's Gate as one of its greatest generals under the banner of the Bladed Crescent. The backstory borrows heavily from the established Forgotten Realms history, always a plus for AD&D fans. Dark Alliance progresses from strength to strength - every new area presents something new and different to enjoy. This game is running on a rock-solid 3D engine, though, with completely rotatable dungeons, brilliant animation for nearly every interactive element (of which there are many), and first-rate lighting effects of all different kinds. It doesn't necessarily look it until you see the game running yourself, because the perspective is always far away and the atmosphere is generally too dark for screenshots to show very much. It helps, furthermore, that this is still one of the most polished games we've seen on the PS2. ![]() Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance doesn't look quite adventuresome enough to work in any Tarrasque action, but you get to whack Gelatinous Cubes almost right off the bat, and that's more than enough for me. See, I have not played Dungeons & Dragons for many a year, but I retain a certain fondness for its little quirks of scene and setting - weird items like ioun stones and the Deck of Many Things, weird monsters like the bulette, the Tarrasque, and of course, the gelatinous cube. Or not, in which case you may file quietly out the back and leave all the happy gelatinous cube fans alone.
